GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow



Designed for youth ages 11-14. The American Red Cross GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow program provides a foundation of lifeguarding and life skills. For youth with swimming skills, this program makes an ideal transition between Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and the Lifeguard Training Course.

GuardStart focuses on five key areas:

  • Prevention of aquatic accidents
  •  Fitness and swimming skills
  • Response in an emergency
  • Leadership skills
  • Professionalism as a lifeguard

Prerequisites: Ability to swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. Ability to tread water for one minute using arms and legs. Ability to submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.


Cost: $150 ($50 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of registration)


Lifeguard Training Course


Cost: $300 ($50 non-refundable deposit is due at time of registration)

Prerequisites: Ability to swim 300 meters: 150 freestyle & 150 breaststroke; Retrieve 10 pound brick from the deep end (12 feet) in less than 1 minute 40 seconds; tread water for 2 minutes without using hands.

Participants must be at least 15 years old by end of course and must be strong swimmers. Space is limited.

Successful candidates will receive certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid
